Per Investopedia the definition of a TICK Index is this: The TICK index compares the number of stocks that are rising to the number of stocks that are falling on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The index measures stocks making an up-tick and subtracts stocks making a down-tick. For example, there are roughly 2,800 stocks listed on the NYSE. The NYSE Tick Index is calculated by taking all the NYSE stocks on upticks, less all of the NYSE stocks on downticks. For example, the New York Stock Exchange has about 2800 stocks. If 1800 of those stocks are on an uptick, and 1000 on a downtick, the NYSE Tick reading at that moment would be +1000. This particular Index is calculated by subtracting the number of stocks on the NYSE that are currently on downticks from the number of stocks on the NYSE that are currently on upticks.
